Amazon Product Photography Requirements and How to Nail Them with AI

Complete Amazon image spec list, the 7-slot strategy, common rejection reasons, and how AI generates compliant images from a single source photo.

Amazon rejects listings for image violations every day. The rules are specific. Match them once and you avoid rework, delays, and lost sales. This guide covers every requirement and how to meet them with AI.

Complete Spec Table

RequirementSpecification
Main image backgroundPure white: RGB 255, 255, 255. No gradients, shadows, or textures.
Product fillProduct must fill 85% or more of the image area.
Minimum dimension1600 px on the longest side. 2000 px or higher recommended.
Main image contentProduct only. No text, watermarks, logos, or lifestyle elements on the main image.
File formatsJPEG, PNG, or TIFF.
Max file size10 MB per image.
Color modesRGB.

Deviate on any of these and Amazon may reject the listing or suppress the Buy Box. The main image is the strictest. Slots 2 through 7 allow lifestyle, infographics, and context shots. But slot 1 must be product-on-white only.

The 7 Image Slots Strategy

Amazon allows up to 7 images per variation. Use all of them. Listings with 7 images convert at roughly 3x the rate of listings with 1 image.

SlotPurposeBackgroundContent
1 (Main)Search and PDP thumbnailPure whiteProduct only, fills 85%+ of frame
2Lifestyle contextAnyProduct in use or styled scene
3InfographicAnyKey features, dimensions, benefits
4Size comparisonAnyProduct next to common object (coin, hand, ruler)
5PackagingAnyBox, labels, unboxing view
6Detail closeupAnyTexture, material, craftsmanship
7In-use or alternate angleAnyDifferent angle or application

Slot 1 drives click-through from search. Slots 2 through 7 drive conversion on the PDP. Shoppers who scroll through all 7 images are more likely to buy. Give them reasons to scroll.

Conversion Data: Why 7 Images Matter

Amazon does not publish official conversion metrics. Third-party data from seller tools and agencies consistently shows:

  • Listings with 1 image: baseline conversion rate.
  • Listings with 3 to 5 images: 1.5x to 2x conversion lift.
  • Listings with 7 images: 2.5x to 3x conversion lift.

The lift is largest in categories where shoppers compare options (electronics, home goods, beauty). In commodity categories (books, basic supplies), the difference is smaller but still positive. Filling all 7 slots costs little extra once you have a workflow. The payoff is measurable.

How AI Generates Amazon-Compliant Images

Upload one source photo: product on white or neutral gray, well lit, product fills most of the frame. AI tools can:

  1. Main image: Generate or refine a pure white background. Some tools have an "Amazon" or "white background" preset. Output meets RGB 255, 255, 255.
  2. Lifestyle (slots 2, 7): Place the same product in marble, wood, kitchen, or bathroom scenes. The product stays accurate. The environment changes.
  3. Detail closeup (slot 6): Generate zoomed or cropped versions emphasizing texture or material. Useful when your source photo is wide and you need a detail view.
  4. Infographic (slot 3): AI cannot add text or dimensions. You still need a design tool (Canva, Figma) for infographics. AI can produce the product shot that goes inside the infographic frame.

One source photo yields 4 to 6 usable slot 2 through 7 images. For slot 1, ensure your source has a clean background or use a background remover first, then place the product on white. AI can also take a product cutout and render it on pure white. Total time from upload to 7 images: about 10 to 15 minutes.

Common Rejection Reasons and Fixes

Rejection reasonCauseFix
Background not whiteOff-white, gray, or colored pixels in main imageUse background remover, place on RGB 255,255,255. Check in Photoshop or similar.
Product too smallProduct fills less than 85% of frameCrop tighter or reshoot. Product should nearly touch frame edges.
Text on main imageWatermark, logo, or callout on main imageMain image = product only. Move text to slots 2 through 7.
Low resolutionLongest side under 1600 pxExport at 2000 px or higher. Never upscale from 800 px.
Wrong aspect ratioExtreme portrait or landscapeAmazon displays square. Use 1:1. 2000 x 2000 px is safe.
Multiple productsMore than one product in main imageMain image = single product. Variants get separate parent/child listings.
Prohibited contentNudity, violence, restricted itemsFollow category-specific rules. No exceptions.

Most rejections are fixable in under 10 minutes. Background and size issues account for the majority. Run your main image through a background checker (many tools show RGB values) before upload. Aim for 255, 255, 255 on every pixel of the background.

FAQ

Does Amazon allow AI-generated product images?

Yes. Amazon has no policy against AI-generated images. The product must be accurately represented. AI that keeps the product intact and changes only background and lighting is acceptable. Misleading edits (adding features the product does not have) violate policy regardless of how the image was created.

What size should I upload for Amazon?

2000 x 2000 px minimum. Amazon displays at 1000 px or less on most devices, but the source file should be at least 1600 px. Larger files (2500 or 3000 px) future-proof for zoom and high-resolution displays. Keep file size under 10 MB. JPEG at 90% quality usually lands in the 500 KB to 2 MB range.

Can I use a transparent background for the main image?

No. Amazon requires a white background for the main image. Transparent (PNG) works for slots 2 through 7 in some cases, but the main image must show white, not transparency. Use RGB 255, 255, 255.

How do I get a pure white background from a phone photo?

  • Option 1: Shoot on white paper with even lighting.
  • Option 2: Use a background remover (Photoroom, Remove.bg, Photoshop) to cut out the product, then place it on a white layer.
  • Option 3: Use AI product photography with an "Amazon" or "white background" preset.

All three produce compliant results. Remover + white layer is the most reliable for tricky products.

What if my product has a shadow?

Amazon prefers minimal or no visible shadow on the main image. A soft, barely visible shadow is usually accepted. A dark, hard shadow may trigger rejection. Use diffused lighting or remove the shadow in post. AI tools often reduce or eliminate shadows when generating white-background output.
